Mikel Obi's agent John Shittu among those whose phone was hacked by sun Journalist

MIKEL Obi's agent John Shittu has been confirmed by the Metropolitan Police as one of those whose phones was hacked by News of the World journalists in 2005.

Over the last week, Mr Shittu has been meeting with senior Metropolitan Police officers  to discuss the hacking scandal. In 2005, Mikel was at the centre of a transfer war between Manchester United and Chelsea which dragged on until the start of the 2006/07 season when he finally signed for Chelsea.

Mikel signed for Chelsea on July 19 2006 for a fee of £16m, bringing about an end to one of football's messiest transfer sagas.  Both English clubs claimed they had a deal with Lyn Oslo in Norway to buy the player and after a protracted legal battle, Chelsea ended up having to pay Manchester United £12m in compensation.

It appears that the News of the World was hacking Shittu's phone throughout the saga. It is not yet clear what Shittu will do next. He has the option of suing News International, the owners of News of the World or reaching for an out-of-court settlement.
