Nigerian gets 22 years in U.S. prison for helping al Qaeda affiliate

A 35 year old Nigerian man, Lawal Babafemi was sentenced to 22 years in prison by a US court in Brooklyn yesterday August 12th for receiving weapons training from al Qaeda's Yemeni affiliate and writing rap lyrics, among other contributions, for the group's English-language media operations.

Lawal ,who was extradited to the US from Nigeria after he was accused of the crime, pleaded guilty to the allegations in April 2014 but was sentenced yesterday


According to prosecutors, Lawal had traveled from Nigeria to Yemen twice between January 2010 and August 2011 to meet with leaders of al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, known as AQAP and while in Yemen, Lawal who went by a pseudo name "Ayatollah Mustapha", worked on the terror groups media operations, including its magazine "Inspire,".

He and two others, a Vietnamese man named Minh Quang Pham and US citizen, Samir Khan who served as contributing writers and editors for the terror group magazine, produced the magazine.

Prosecutors say there are pictures of Lawal and his accomplices in the magazine wearing camouflage and holding rifles. It was also stated by the Prosecutors that the group's leadership, including Anwar al-Awlaki, paid Lawal almost $9,000 to recruit English speakers from Nigeria.

We Joined Armed Robbery After Smoking Indian Hemp – Suspects

A suspected armed robbery gang have confessed to the police in Lagos that becoming Indian hemp (Cannabis Sativa) smokers led them into violent crime.

The gang, was arrested by the operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of Zone 2 of the Nigeria Police Force based at Onikan, Lagos.

One of them, simply identified as Chukwuemeka, says he was introduced into armed robbery after he joined Indian hemp (Cannabis Sativa) smokers at a popular suburb of Lagos, Ajegunle.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the suspect and three other members of his gang were arrested on July 23 at Ajegunle, while on their way for an operation.

Robber caught stealing church offering the 3rd time

A suspected church robber, Ehiosun Junior, was caught during an alleged attempt to make away with church offerings during its annual thanksgiving.

The Pastor in charge of the church, Christ Apostolic Church, Rev. Igbinigie Anthony, said the alleged thief had broken into the church on three previous occasion and made away with cash amounting to N52, 000.

Victoria and one other member of her gang were arrested recently by the men of Lagos State SARS, who had been on their trail after receiving a tip-off about the gang’s plan.

Captured notorious Kidnapper Vampire, confessed to Killing his girlfriend and her 6 family memebers in one day

On Saturday, February 16, 2013, Henry Chibueze, a notorious kidnapper terrorizing South East and South South parts of the country, stormed the home of his girlfriend, Sandra Ijedinma, at Igando area of Lagos State, with an AK47 assault rifle and opened fire on everyone present in the apartment, killing his girlfriend, her elder sister Praise Ozor, and her two children.
Not satisfied, Henry proceeded to a nearby street where one of Sandra’s elder sisters resided and killed the woman and three of her children, before fleeing.
His anger was said to have been that Sandra, who was an optician with Madonna University, had called off their relationship, when she learnt that he was a kidnapper. Sandra’s twin sister, Katherine who sustained a bullet would during the attack had told vanguard in 2013 that the assailant was familiar with everyone in their family but nobody knew he was a kidnapper .

18-year-old Nigerian Isaiah Ekpaloba (left) was stabbed to death in Wood Green, UK, after a fight with his friend Jaydee Dorsett (right) following what police believe was a dispute over drugs on 9th January, 2015.

Jaydee, 20, has now been found guilty of his murder and was sentenced to life yesterday, July 27th for murder and will serve a minimum of 12 years before he is eligible for parole. He was also sentenced to fours years for attempted wounding with intent.

According to the Police, the altercation which led to the murder began when Isaiah Ekpaloba and Lamont Roper (pictured above), 18, drove to Dorsett's house in Wood Green with the intention of robbing him of drugs.

Dorsett was also found guilty of attempted wounding of Lamont Roper. Meanwhile, Lamont was found guilty of conspiracy to rob Dorsett and sentenced to seven and a half years for conspiracy to rob and three and a half years for both counts of robbery.

Tesco worker finds drugs worth £600k in box of bananas

Drugs with an estimated value of more than £600,000 have been found inside a box of bananas by a Tesco worker.

The worker was unpacking the fruit shipped from South America when he discovered five bags, each containing white powder and weighing 1kg.

Police are investigating after being called to the Tesco superstore in Wokingham, Berkshire, last Wednesday.

Director of drug research company the Independent Monitoring Unit, Matthew Atha said: "White powder from South America? It's going to be cocaine."

Mr Atha said each bag could be worth up to £150,000 and even more when valued at street value.

Tesco say on their website that the majority of their bananas are imported from farms across Costa Rica and then transported to "distribution centres" throughout the UK before being sent out to stores.

Mr Atha said it was possible someone from the distribution centre missed the collection of the drugs.

He said: "I think that it is not impossible that someone in Tesco was involved in it, but it is more likely that it is someone from the distribution who wasn't there on the day to collect the delivery, or had been arrested on other charges."

Thames Valley Police said: "We were called on 22 July to Tesco at Finchampstead Road, Wokingham to reports of packages being found in a consignment of fruit. They are believed to be class A drugs. Officers are investigating."

Mr Atha added: "It is quite likely that it has been going on for quite some time. The authorities will be paying particular attention to whoever the distributor is I expect."

In two recent similar discoveries £11m worth of cocaine was accidentally delivered in boxes of fruit to 13 German branches of supermarket Aldi and in 2013 the class A drugs were found again in bananas in a Danish store.

A Tesco spokeswoman said: "We are helping police with their investigations."

Man arrested for allegedly trying to sell his II-yr-old son to an Alahaji for N100,000

In a suburb of Calabar metropolis, the capital of Cross River State, neighbours of 40-year-old Monday Okon Inyang, are in shock, following news of his alleged attempt to sell his 11-year-old son, David Monday Inyang, for the sum N100,000 to an Alhaji in the Bogobiri area of the state capital.

Operatives from the State Criminal Inves­tigation Department, Cross River State Police Command, arrested the suspect, when the sup­posed buyer, (name concealed), demonstrated patriotism and aversion to child trafficking by alerting the police that Inyang, who hails from Itu Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State, had offered to sell his son to him.

Abuja church robbers apprehended by police

The popular adage, many days for the thief, one day for the owner of the house, came through when two armed robbery suspects were arrested by men of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the Federal Capital Territory Police Command in Abuja.

The two suspects who belonged to a gang of four robbers that specialized in joining genuine worshippers to attending Sunday ser­vices and then returning to steal the offering for the day from the same churches, met their waterloo after robbing the Kingdom Connection Church, Jabi Daki-Biyu and St. Matthew Catholic Church in Karmo Abuja.

EFCC Arraigns Two For $64,000 Romance Scam

 

The defendants, Akhigbe and Jindu were arrested by the EFCC sometime in 2013 based on a petition from one Jolanta K, an American. Jolanta alleged that she met Jindu, who introduced himself as a self-employed Caucasian pharmacist, online in June 2012. Impressed by his profile she “fell in love” with him, and both agreed to get married.

Killers of former FUTA VC: “We strangled him before hiding his body”

Yemi Bamitale and Daniel Ita, driver and security guard to the slain former Vice Chancellor of Federal University of Technology, Akure, FUTA, Prof. Albert Ilemobade, on Monday gave graphic details of how they killed their former employer in cold blood.

The suspects, now in police custody, were picked up at Iloti, in Ogun State, where they were about to sell off the vehicle stolen from the late professor.

While being paraded at the Ondo State Police Command, the suspects said the plan to kill the professor and take his car away for sale was hatched a day before the act was committed.

Bamitale, a driver, who was sacked by Prof. Ilemobade months earlier, said the incident was his second attempt to steal the car.

How FUTA VC was killed by hiw own security guard and driver

he body of the former Vice Chancellor of Federal University of Technology, Akure, (FUTA), Prof. Albert Ilemobade, was on Sunday found at the generator house of his Ijapo residence in Akure, the Ondo State capital, after he went missing a week ago.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Wole Ogodo, told PREMIUM TIMES that when the deceased was reported missing last Monday, the suspicion was that he was kidnapped.

“What we have now is that his security man at his house and his driver actually strangled him to death,” Mr. Ogodo said.

“We thought it was kidnapping, but throughout the period, there was no phone call and so there was no contact between anyone and the family members.”

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) today arraigned a couple, Prince Alphonsus Mbakwe and his wife, Mrs Florence Mbakwe before Justice Lawal Akapo of the Lagos State High Court on a five-count charge bordering on obtaining money by false pretence and stealing.

The couple allegedly defrauded one Professor Uchenna Elike by claiming to help him secure a consultancy job in the Presidency.

A 37-year-old man, Sylvester Chukwunwendu (pictured above) who runs a notorious drug syndicate in Nigeria has been apprehended by the officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency NDLEA. Parading the suspect before newsmen in Lagos, the National Chairman of NDLEA, Ahmadu Giade said Sylvester, who runs a methamphetamine production laboratory in his house at in the Ajao Estate, Isolo area of Lagos, was arrested at Ozubulu in Ekwusigo LGA of Anambra State following a tip off.
