Former Liberian President, Charles Taylor will now spend the rest of his life in prison

The former Liberian President, Charles Taylor has been sentenced to 50 years in prison  on 11 count crime charges by the UN- backed war crime court.

Last month Taylor  who lived in exile in Nigeria before he was extradited to Liberia was found guilty of aiding and abetting rebels in Sierra Leone during the 1991-2001 civil war.

During the sentencing, Judge Richard Lussick said crimes in Sierra Leone were the most heinous in human history

Taylor was accused of a lot of atrocities including  murder,  rape of women and girls and amputation of limbs.

The prosecution had initially sought 80 years prison term for the war lord, but the judge found the recommendation "excessive" citing "limited scope" of the conviction at some points, according to BBC

His defence attorney said they will appeal,  which is expected to last up to six months and if the  64 year old loses it will spend the remainder of hid life in in prison
