The Lagos state government has suspended the
Principal of Ikeja Grammar School, Lagos, for allowing a reporter into the
school to take pictures of the school’s terrible state of furnitures.
Punch newspaper, last Saturday reported with
photos, the negligence of the school by the state Ministry of Education. Pupil
were seen in the pictures taking lessons through the windows, while some turned
the widows to their class desks.
But having been embarrassed by the report, the
state government suspended the school principal for allowing a journalist to
take pictures of classes and students.
Even with the report that the Principal was not
on seat when the journalist visited the school, top officials of the Education
Ministry have decided to hold him responsible for the revelation.
A teacher who spoke on condition of anonymity,
said the principal was removed from her position just to punish her over the
report that went viral.
The teacher said, “This is more serious than
you think; you have put this school in trouble. The education ‘oga’
(commissioner) and other state officials summoned the principal on Monday and
she has been removed from her position.
“She was asked to start reporting to the office
of the permanent secretary of the ministry of education as from Tuesday.”
Relatively, it has been revealed that another
teacher who was in class when the photographs were taken has equally been
queried. She is to explain how a Journalist could be allowed into the classroom
when she was in class.
Another source has revealed that a teacher, a
head of department, is also facing the ministry’s ‘fire’ with regard to the
said publication.
The Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Olayinka
Oladunjoye, having read the story admitted that the school was facing some
challenges, and had promised to tackle the issue of furniture immediately.
She said, “Thank you for your observation; as I
write, chairs are being supplied and before too long, it will go round the
schools,”
However report says no new chairs have been
supplied to the school as at Friday evening.
