In a rare show of bravery, a
female official of Integrated parking Services (IPS), one of the licensed
companies for provision of on-street parking in Abuja on Monday facilitated the
arrest of a suspected car thief at Utako.
According to an eyewitness, the parking enforcement
official, Gloria Matthias, who was working at her post on Ekukinam Street Utako
saw the car snatching suspect, Mr. Onyebuchi Okoye attempting to force open a
Toyota Camry car belonging to a senior pastor of the Mountain of Fire Ministry
Church in the area, and alerted security men posted to thechurch, leading to
the eventual arrest of the car snatcher, who was handed over to the police.
Confirming the incident, the Divisional Police Officer,
DPO of Utako division, Abdulbaki Umar, an Assistant Commissioner, said the
suspected car thief appeared to have some mental problems, based on preliminary
investigation.
He however said that further investigation would be
carried out in the matter just as he commended the parking enforcement official
for her bravery. Umar also observed that sanity had returned to the area since
IPS commenced services in the area, urging the company to do more.
“First, let confirm the arrest and hand over of the car
thief suspect by the agency. The agency female official single handedly
arrested him and was aided by the police posted to the church and brought to
us.
“We commend the effort of the park company for assisting
surveillance on vehicles within Utako and environs and I must confess that they
are helping the police on surveillance. Let everybody support the police for
the task of securing the city,” he stated.
Commenting on the incident, Chief Executive of IPS, Abdul
Iliyasu, said his officials were assisting car owners mount surveillance on
their vehicles in the course of their services.
He recalled similar instances where officials of the
company in the course of their duty had prevented car thieves from stealing
residents’ cars and promised that the company would continue to work with
security in securing cars and within the territory.
